Bunny Blood Pressure “Treatment.” As I looked at our resident bunny, little Princess, happily munching on some fresh food in her cage I wonder if she realises what the presence of sweet, little animals like her, means to us, here at Sunnyside. 1. She has a safe place to sleep. 2. She has plenty of food and water. 3. She has the safety of the cage where, although she can’t get out, neither can anyone or anything get in to hurt her either. 4. She has plenty of affection from staff and residents. She gets great naps in her plastic igloo. For little creatures like Princess, this is her travelling “home.” As long as all her needs are met she is as happy as anything to stay and keep us company. She doesn’t ask for much; only what she needs, including the occasional hugs and carroty treats that might also come her way. The truth is that furry little bundles like Princess are small packages of unconditional love for staff and residents here at Sunnyside; one piece of evidence of the sweetness and innocence of God’s beautiful creatures put on earth for the delight of humankind. It is said that stroking the soft fur of a tame animal like the bunny, or cat or dog, reduces its owner’s blood pressure by several numbers. When all the rest of the world is going wild around us, it is good to turn off the news on the TV, plop a little creature on our lap, or sit next to the cage of the bunnies and kittens that pass our way, and look into their eyes and drift away into a place of blood-pressure reducing calmness. One day all this madness of this present life will be transformed back into what God originally intended. “The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them” (Isaiah 11:6). |
