One early summer night a number of years ago, I was driving country roads from my parent’s place back to Saskatoon when I noticed a fire a little ways off to the south. Not knowing if there was a farmyard in danger, I found a dirt road that would lead me in the general direction of the fire. I worked my way toward the blaze until I could see the billowing smoke rising on just the other side of a grove of trees. By the glow of the fire, I could make out a break in the tree line, so I cut through a nicely plowed field and headed straight for the fire.

Just at the spot where the field narrowed between the trees, my car dropped axle-deep into thick mud. I should have known better. As it turned out, there was no farmyard. There were no people nearby. There was no danger. Only damp soil and wet vegetation for miles around. At least I had a fire to keep me warm until morning.

Looking back, I can easily see where I went wrong. Looking forward is the challenge.
